Choosing the right keyword phrases are essential for online success

Targeting your Keyword Research is a fundamental part of getting a website ranked with the search engines and bringing high volumes of targeted visitors to the site.

Target the wrong keywords in a PPC campaign and you could bring the wrong visitors and waste budget whilst aligning an SEO campaign to the wrong niche keyword phrase can give meaningless rankings with the search engines that fail to convert into targeted traffic.

After years working in the SEO industry we understand how to find and suggest the most powerful keywords that will ensure our clients get the results they need whether looking to work out a new site structure and content, set up and manage a PPC Campaign, complete an SEO campaign or simply looking for ideas for online marketing activity.

Keyword Research is very much an ongoing process and not something that should be completed once and never revisited. We regularly review Keywords for our SEO clients to ensure that their site continues to target the phrases that will bring them the best targeted traffic. We also use it to provide ideas for new content for the website pages, blogs and other marketing activity to help our clients stay ahead of the competition.

Either as part of one of our SEO campaigns or as a stand- alone service we have time and time again secured high rankings and new business for clients taking advantage of targeted niche keywords.

We use a structured approach to Keyword Research & Analysis which can be broken down into 5 seperate (but essential) stages for clients:

Stage 1 – Get an Initial Keyword Seed List

The starting point of any target keyword research is the initial collation of as many potential keywords as possible - at this stage we are not worrying too much about how popular a phrase is but to get as much data as we can as a starting point.

We ask our clients to provide an initial seed list and then expand on it ourselves making sure we’ve taken into account the following:

Stage 2 – Competitor Analysis

The next stage is to review some well ranking competitor sites to get an idea of the keywords they are targeting. We use a mixture of our experience in implementing SEO campaigns and some specific software to analyse competitor sites, identify they keywords being targeted and add them to the list (if not already included).

Whilst this can be a useful source of additional keywords it is important to note that just because a competitor is targeting or ranking for a particular search phrase doesn’t mean it is a valuable one to go after. They may well have it wrong!

Stage 3 – Keyword Research Tools

We then use Keyword Tools to determine the level of searches and competition for each Keyword on the list as well as identifying additional related niche keywords.

As an established SEO company we complete Keyword Research for our clients not only at the start of our relationship but also throughout the SEO campaign and so have invested in a number of paid Keyword Tools to benefit our clients.

Stage 4 – The Final List of Targeted Keywords

Once all of the keywords on the list have been reviewed in terms of not only the number of searches but also the number of competing sites we analyse all of the core data in order to remove from the list those that don’t have sufficient search volume or possibly have too much competition to warrant targeting in a given timeframe.

Whilst in the first instance we will be recommending Keywords to target across the existing site content we will also make recommendations on additional areas of content that can be developed across the site to target other keyword phrases.

The final list will also include a mixture of short and long tail keywords which should be targeted throughout the SEO campaign in order to bring targeted traffic and help maximise conversions.

Stage 5 – Plan Keyword Strategy

The final stage of the process is to decide how the identified Keywords are targeted across the site. Each page should generally only target 4-5 keywords (sometimes less) and so we plan a strategy that covers as many of the recommended keywords as possible across the site as a whole whilst ensuring that the targeting across each individual page isn’t diluted by trying to target too many phrases.

At the end of the process clients get a detailed Keyword Research Report of recommended keywords and a targeting strategy for them in addition to the core data from the Keyword Research (excel format).
