Because hits are a generally false commodity, as each URL webpage can generate multiple hits and potentially give you a wrong idea as to the actual traffic your site is receiving..

A hit is recorded every time a unique file (image files, script files, HTML files etc.) is downloaded.

Since a single web page can be made up of any number of specific unique files (hundreds or thousands even), measuring hits is usually meaningless in measuring the overall success of your website.
